As we are honing in on the hottest days of the year it is crucial to stay hydrated to keep our bodies running smoothly. Water is necessary for survival and essential to your health.

Water makes up approximately 60% to 70% of the human body by weight.  The human brain is made up of 95% water, blood is 82% and lungs are 90% water.

Signs and symptoms of dehydration:

  • Fatigue
  • Excessive thirst
  • Headache
  • Dizziness or feeling lightheaded
  • Infrequent or dark urination
  • Muscle weakness or cramping


Tips to stay hydrated: 

  • Drink ½ of your body weight in ounces of water everyday.
  • Carry around your water bottle like it is an extension of your arm. 
  • Replace calorie-laden and artificial soft drinks with water. 
  • Drink pure filtered water throughout the day for optimum health.

Electrolytes are positively or negatively charged ions that conduct electrical activity and help the body function normally. In the human body electrolytes must be present in proper concentrations.

Some of the more familiar electrolytes include sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium. Calcium and magnesium help muscles contract and relax. Sodium and potassium help water stay in the right balance inside and outside of cells. Sodium is the electrolyte lost in the highest concentration in sweat.
