This week, we want to discuss the importance of staying hydrated! Water is essential for life and maintaining proper hydration is critical for physical and mental performance. Water makes up roughly 2/3 of the body and helps to maintain blood volume and energy levels. It keeps your eyes and joints lubricated and your skin supple and hydrated. Water is essential for proper digestion and eliminating toxins from the body.

What are symptoms of dehydration?

  • Increased Thirst
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Palpitations
  • Fainting
  • Inability to sweat
  • Decreased Urine Production
  • Muscle Cramping
  • Dry Mouth
  • Swollen Tongue
  • Low Blood Pressure
  • Headache

What are some common causes of dehydration?

  • Vomiting or Diarrhea
  • Excessive Sweating
  • Diabetes and Frequent Urination
  • Not drinking enough water
  • Lack of dietary minerals

Of course we know that drinking more water is helpful, but did you know that you can be drinking enough water and still be dehydrated? A deficiency of essential minerals and electrolytes can be another cause of dehydration. We need sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, magnesium, and trace minerals (Copper, Chromium, Fluoride, Iodine, Iron, Molybdenum, Manganese, Selenium, Zinc etc) to maintain hydration. Without the proper balance of these minerals, we can drink plenty of water and still be dehydrated. We carry Extreme X2O, a mineral sachet which provides essential minerals and alkalizes drinking water. You just add one sachet to your water bottle in the morning and continue to pour water over it throughout the day. Here is a link to our website if you would like to try them. There are 30 sachets per package.

You can test for severe dehydration by using the 'skin snap' test. Pinch the skin on the back of your hand and lift up. When you release the skin, it should 'snap back' quickly. If there is a time lag in how quickly the skin returns, this is a marker of severe dehydration. Please note that you can be mildly or moderately dehydrated without displaying a slow skin return.
